Thanks to our Canopy Grant, we were able to develop an 8 page guide to the arboretum, available in print at our kiosk or office, and online. The guide includes fascinating facts about trees found in the park, a walking tour, a map and key, resources and activities to do.

It finally rained, but this summer has really been one of extraordinary drought, which has been the case during several of the last five summers.
If you are planting new trees on a property as we are in the park, sequential years of drought are bad news for these newer transplants…and all trees, really.

Creating an arboretum has been a chance to beautify and renew the park as well as creating a place to learn about trees. As we went to renew the plantings at the century old City Park, we thought about the changes happening with old trees dying from storms and other causes and how we would both replace those and add to the diversity of the arboretum.

This spring, the District implemented the second phase of tree planting for the City Park Arboretum, funded by the Maine Forest Service Project Canopy. District staff and volunteers planted 10 new trees, including native Maine conifers, oaks, and understory trees such as ironwood, witch hazel and moosewood trees.
